25th AIAA International Communications Satellite Systems Conference (ICSSC 2007)

10-13 April 2007, COEX, Seoul, Korea

With focus on the theme of “Evolution Toward a Ubiquitous Society”, ICSSC 2007 was successfully organized by the Asia-Pacific Satellite Communications Council (APSCC) in conjunction with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the AIAA-Japan Forum on Satellite Communications (AIAA-JFSC). The event marks to be the first AIAA ICSSC held in Seoul, Korea in the history of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

The 4-day event, including the 1-day colloquium on Satellite Broadcasting for Mobile Users explored the evolutionary directions of advanced satellite technologies, as well as the possible means to vitalize satellite markets by new technologies toward a ubiquitous network society.

ICSSC 2007 was opened by Dr. Hong-yul Paik, Chairman of the Organizing Committee. In a keynote address delivered by Dr. Jeong-Ju Rhiu, Vice President of Korea Aerospace Research Institute, Dr. Rhiu emphasized the importance of introducing new satellite applications and services for a ubiquitous society. Dr. Nongluck Phinanitisart, President of APSCC, delivered her congratulatory address to the audience talking about some issues including the digital divide and disaster management that need to be taken into consideration to build ubiquitous network infrastructures.

After the opening ceremony, three plenary sessions, namely the View from Space Agencies of Asia session, the View from Satellite Industry Leaders session and the Satellite Systems and Reliability session were held in sequence.

Representatives from the Korean and Japanese space agencies presented their space activities that are currently being implemented and the nations’ space plans at the Plenary Session for Space Agencies of Asia. The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) introduced gave an up-to-date briefing on their COMS Program, the Korean Communications, Oceanic and Meteorological Satellite Project, which will be launched at the end of 2008. Meanwhile, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) presented the role of satellite communications and the missions of space communications in ubiquitous networked society.

At the following Plenary Session on View from Satellite Industry Leaders, major satellite operators, manufacturers, launchers and broadcasting service providers discussed their position in the competitive satellite market. During the session, all the participants agreed on the idea that flexibility and versatility are the key aspects of satellite services.

Speakers from world-class satellite manufactures and system operators including Space Systems/Loral, Orbital, Thales Alenia Space, IOT Systems, AsiaSat, Telesat Canada and MEASAT discussed on the comprehensive picture of the ongoing effort for new technologies to ensure satellite reliability at the Plenary Session on Satellite Systems and Reliability

In the following two days’ technical sessions at ICSSC 2007, 162 papers were presented offering an opportunity for in-depth discussion on not only the technical issues but also the economic, marketing, and regulatory issues related to satellite systems.

For the first time in the ICSSC history, the Best Paper, Excellent Paper and Best Student Paper awards were presented at ICSSC 2007.  Meanwhile, the traditional AIAA Aerospace Communications Award was presented to Robert Briskman, Co-founder and Technical Executive of Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. for his outstanding contribution in the field of aerospace communications and for his pioneering efforts in developing the Satellite Digital Radio Services.

The next ICSSC 2008 will be held in San Diego on 9-12 June 2008.
