APSCC
organized the Next-Generation Satellite Communications & Applications
(NGSCA) 2009 Workshop on November 16 – 17 at Grand Ball Room in
Haeundae Grand Hotel in Busan, Korea. Hosted by the Electronic and
Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and sponsored by the
Korea Communications Commission (KCC), the workshop ended with huge
success with more than 230 attendees participating in the event.
During
the course of the 2-day workshop, international experts have presented
industrial reports as well as technologies trends in the various
fields in the satellite industry including B3G/4G technologies.
This workshop marks to be a memorable event in 2009 for the APSCC,
since satellite industrial leaders in Korea have gathered together
to create a brand-new networking opportunity link through the various
presentation sessions as well as social events.

The
all day sessions for the 2 days consisted of 6 presentation sessions
with 16 prominent speakers from major affiliations in the satellite
industry. In accordance with the main theme of the workshop, the
1st session presentation topics covered issues regarding the B3G/4G
technologies as well as the MSS technologies trends. After Nicolas
Chuberre, Project Manager at Thales Alenia Space presented a session
regarding “Trends in Mobile Satellite Systems” with great passion,
Advisor of Star Asia Technologies, Robert H. Brumley captivated
the audience with a presentation topic “Next Generation Satellite
Systems: Hybrid MSS-Terrestrial Consideration & Applications.”

The
afternoon session of the first day was opened by two notable key
note addresses by Byung-Jo Suh, Assistant Chairman of Korea Communications
Commission and Chieteuk Ahn, Senior Vice President of ETRI. Moderated
by Dr. Soo Young Kim from Chonbuk National University of Korea,
Yoshiyuki Fujino, Senior Researcher of NICT introduced an interesting
presentation regarding the R&D Plan of Satellite/Terrestrial
Integrated Mobile Communication Systems for secured and safety society.
After that Ho Jin Lee, Director of ETRI presented ETRI’s R&D
Status Report.
During
the third session of the first day, session moderator, Man Seok
Eum from ETRI introduced the interesting presentation on “Large
Aperture Reflector”, which was presented by Edward Keay, Director
of Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems Astro Aerospace. As the final
presenter of the last session of the first day themed “On-board
Large Antennas”, Alexander Shishlov, Vice Director of APEX wrapped
up the day with his in-depth presentation regarding “Multibeam
Reflector Antennas with Active Feed Arrays.”
The
workshop participants had an enough time to discuss and exchange
additional information & knowledge regarding the presentations
today at the welcome reception.
The
first session of the second day, “Wideband Satellite Communications”,
was opened with a presentation on “WINDS SHV Transmission Experiment”
by Takashi Takahashi, Research Manager of NICT. Moderated by Ji
Won Jeong from the Korea Maritime University, Alessandro Vanelli-Coralli,
Professor of University of Bologna shared his presentation on the
“Next Generation VSAT.” The last presentation was given on the
theme “Emerging Architecture for Satellite Broadband Systems”
by Nicolas Chuberre, Project Manager of Thales Alenia Space.
Won
Chan Jeong, the moderator of the session on “Satellite Navigation”
led the session by introducin the first session presenter, Christopher
Rizos, Professor of the University of New South Wales. Followed
by that presentation was another interesting topic on “Next Generation
GNSS: Research Challenges and Application Opportunities”, presented
by Yong Jin Moon, Research Scientist of GFZ-Potsdam. During the
session he reported on the “Satellite Geodesy in GFZ” with the
various presentation materials.
The
NGSCA 2009 Workshop came to the grand finale with the last session
themed “Korean Satellite Industrial Report” moderated by Ho Jin
Lee, Director of ETRI. After the presentation on GNSS and IT's Applications
presented by Moon Bum Heo, Head of KARI, Seong Cheol Moon, Manager
of TU Media, Han Lee, Team Leader of SKYLIFE and Sang Ku Chang,
Director of KT Corp. reported the status of the contemporary Korean
satellite industry.
