Satellite communications underpins distribution of the global pay-TV industry, not only accounting for 80% of the backhaul of all video content, but increasingly in Asia. Asia is representing more than 50% of all high value pay-TV subscribers. With DTH platforms taking a central role in many Asian pay-TV markets, in a finite bandwidth world, what will apparently competing services such as WiMAX mean for broadcasters. How will changing technologies such as IPTV, HD and MPEG-4 change this business? What are the broadcasters and satellite operators doing to plan for these changes? With the advent of WiMAX, satellite broadband is faced with competitive threats given that WiMAX is positioned in part as the enabler for bridging the digital divide. Hybrid implementations of WiMAX and satellite are likewise taking place.
