APSCC Workshop at a Glance

APSCC Workshop on Digital Satellite Broadcasting and Digital Multimedia Broadcasting was held on Jeju Island, Korea from 23 to 25 March 2004.

This 3-day Workshop was planned to provide professionals with forecasts and studies on new services, to evaluate the latest developments in satellite broadcasting, to explore business opportunities arising from new services and solutions, and to share successful examples of service providers achieving integrated services and solutions.
 
The workshop was a timely event since Korea and Japan plan to start up the world's first digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) services by satellite this year. The first satellite for this service, MBSAT, co-owned by Mobile Broadcasting Corporation (MBCO) of Japan and SK Telecom of Korea, was successfully launched on 13 March 2004, just a week and a half before the workshop.

154 executives from 71 companies around the world attended the workshop and speakers and panelists included top executives from KT Corp., MBCO, TU Media Corp., SCC, SkyLife, SkyPerfecTV, Yes TV,

WorldSpace, JS Info, Worldsat, Loral Skynet, AsiaSat, SpeedCast, Intelsat, BT, and Korean regulatory bodies such as the Ministry of Information and Communication, and the Korean Broadcasting Commission.

Dr. Eui K. Koh, President of APSCC, opened the workshop with an address emphasizing the importance and meaning of this event,
stating that "APSCC would very much like to create opportunities for sharing and exchanging invaluable experiences and knowledge in order to promote communication and broadcasting via satellite in the Asia-Pacific region."
 
The keynote speeches were delivered by Mr. Gwang-Ju Seo, Senior Vice President of KT, Mr. Tetsuya Mizoguchi, President & CEO of MBCO and Mr. Joon-Dong Bae, Senior Vice President of TU Media Corp. Mr. Seo of KT emphasized the role of satellites in the era of convergence and presented worldwide satellite market trend and KT's multimedia satellite services. Mr. Mizoguchi of MBCO stressed in his keynote speech that satellite digital multimedia broadcasting has created a new paradigm of broadcasting delivering real ubiquitous multimedia services to vehicles and to personal users. Mr. Bae of TU Media Corp. said that Satellite DMB would change conventional television consumption patterns in three major dimensions: mobility, personal access, and two-way media delivery.

During the session on Satellite TV, speakers from Irdeto Access, Aircode, Mirae Online and Arirang TV presented current solutions and applications of new digital broadcasting services such as conditional access for mobile broadcasting, CATV digitalization and interactive solutions. In the panel discussion on market strategies for DMB, panels from MBCO, WorldSpace and Yes TV discussed the issues of new services business forecasts and possible cooperation for related industries.

The second day of the workshop was opened by a session on policy and regulatory issues for new applications and services. In this session, which focused on digital broadcasting and DMB service by satellite, two speakers representing Korean regulatory bodies explained the license schedule for DMB services, regulations related to channel operation and restrictions upon ownership of DBS stocks in Korea. It was followed by a panel discussion on the satellite broadcasting business, during which representatives of Loral Skynet, iPSTAR and AsiaSat discussed the issues of broadband business in the era of convergence. In the session on satellite operators for  
satellite broadcasting, speakers from Worldsat, AsiaSat, Intelsat and KT gave presentations on the issues related to satellite broadcasting solutions from satellite operators. In the last session of Day 2, presentations were given by Freesat Korea, MBCo and JS Info on DMB receiver equipment for mobile, personal and built-in car use.
 
The last day of workshop opened with a session on the convergence of communications and broadcasting. Speakers from SpeedCast, iPSTAR, Yes TV and Pacific Century Matrix presented the various solutions and services through IP networks by satellite.
In the session on STB, interactivity and Internet applications, several solutions and applications were proposed by Asia Pacific Satellite Industries, BT Global Broadcast Services, OpenTech and Alticast Corp. Durign the session on business models for DMB, speakers from MBCo, TU Media and WorldSpace reviewed business models for DMB services and suggested features of successful business models.

 
In the workshop's concluding panel discussion, panel speakers summarized the issues raised during the workshop and addressed the issues for further development.
 
During the three-day workshop, official social events were also organized to enable participant networking such as the Welcome Reception hosted by KT Corp., and luncheons sponsored by MBCo, TU Media Corp., and WorldSat. Coffee breaks were sponsored by KT Corp., MBCo and TU Media Corp., while delegate bags were provided to Workshop participants by JS Information and Communication.

This workshop was meaningful in that experts from various sectors gathered together to discussed the issues of new business of digital broadcasting and the convergence of communications and broadcasting, the regulations applicable to the new environment, and the mutual cooperation required for the development of new services. Through the workshop, participants had the opportunity to learn about new satellite developments in the Asia Pacific, as well as the opportunity to network.
